Salmond Welcomes Local Lottery Successes

>> 17 August 2010

SNP Gordon MSP Alex Salmond has welcomed the latest round of lottery successes in the constituency – which has seen five community groups scoop nearly £34,000 from the ‘Awards for All’ fund.

Grampian Child Bereavement Network has received a £9,600 grant from the Big Lottery Fund. This will allow them to employ a sessional worker for 20 hours each week, to provide information on the services and needs for bereaved children and young people in the Grampian area.

Also benefiting is Port Elphinstone Toddler Group, which received £660. The money will buy a range of toys and play equipment, including outdoor toys, dressing up outfits, craft materials, educational toys, general toys, books, musical instruments, and a safety gate. Garioch Gymnastics Club is also set to receive £5,000, which will help to cover coaching costs, organise a programme of taster sessions in schools, as well as purchase a new vault table, safety padding and vault trolley.

Some £10,000 has been made available to Gordon District Scout Council to improve the facilities at their camp site in Daviot. The grant will help to part fund a second fire escape, as well as an upgrading of the toilet and kitchen facilities, ensuring that the site will be fully disabled friendly. Meanwhile, in Ellon, the Community Council has recently received a grant of £8,500 to purchase Christmas lights and stage a fireworks display to mark the start of their 2010 Christmas festivities.

Mr Salmond said:

“I’d like to congratulate all the groups concerned on their successes in securing this lottery funding.

“The North East benefits from having very strong communities, and from the work that individuals are prepared to put in, often entirely voluntarily, to help enrich the lives of others around them. I’m delighted that this has been recognised by the scale of the awards which have been made here.

“I hope that these successes can inspire other groups to secure similar grants in the future to help with their activities.”

Awards for All Scotland is supported by the Scottish Arts Council, sportscotland and the Big Lottery Fund. We award grants of between £500 and £10,000 for people to take part in art, sport, heritage and community activities, and projects that promote education, the environment and health in the local community.
