Call for Civic Reception to Honour Aberdeenshire Olympians
>> 7 August 2012
Following a stunning medal performance from several Aberdeenshire’s Olympic athletes, SNP councillors in Aberdeenshire have called for a civic reception to be held to honour local Olympians.
Shadow Leader of the Council, Cllr Hamish Vernal said:
“Athletes from Aberdeenshire have turned in tremendous performances at the Olympic Games, and we can be justly proud of these young men and women who are competing against the best in the world.
“It’s wonderful that so many of our local athletes have been among the medallists and there’s still a few days to go so there may be more added to the tally.
“I think it would be fitting and proper for the council to recognise their achievements with a civic reception in their honour. This is not something Aberdeenshire Council does terribly often but in this case it is entirely merited.
“Councillors have not been advised of any plans to hold such an event so I have today written to the Provost requesting that plans are brought forward so that we can give civic recognition to our local Olympians who have flown the flag for Aberdeenshire and for Scotland at the Olympic Games.”
