SOCIAL HOUSING UP DRAMATICALLY IN ABERDEENSHIRE

>> 14 September 2010

Gordon MSP, Alex Salmond, has welcomed figures showing that Aberdeenshire has seen an average of 62% more affordable homes built each year under the SNP Government than under the previous administration.

The figures also show the SNP Government built 497% more social housing in the last year in Aberdeenshire than Labour did during their last year in power.

Across Scotland, that figure is 83% - the highest number of affordable homes being built since 1982.

Commenting Mr Salmond said:

“These are astonishing figures demonstrating the SNP’s commitment to deliver good quality, sustainable and affordable housing.

“One of the most frequent problems raised by my constituents in Gordon is the difficulty they experience in finding suitable housing and these figures show a major step forward in tackling this issue.

“These substantial building projects have also provided vital work for the local construction sector at an important time, accelerating economic recovery and helping to weather the difficult financial times.

“This is extremely encouraging news and we will continue to work to improve housing provision – securing the right to an affordable home for future generations.”
