Peterhead Councillors Welcome New Store Announcement

>> 20 July 2012

Peterhead councillors have welcomed the announcement by Home Bargains that they are to take over the former Focus DIY store in the town’s Windmill Road.

The store has lain vacant for over a year now after the Focus chain collapsed owing around £1billion.

Home Bargains currently have stores in Elgin, Inverurie and Aberdeen.  This will be their fourth North-east store.

Peterhead South & Cruden councillor Stephen Smith said:

“This is good news and it means that one of the larger vacant retail sites in the town will be filled.

“It underlines what the council’s Economic Development department tell us, which is that the Buchan economy is quite vibrant but this isn’t being reflected in the retail areas of the town, which have taken some knocks during the recession.

“This is a new name coming to the town bringing new jobs and that is to be welcomed.”

Peterhead North & Rattray councillor Anne Allan added:
“I’m delighted at this announcement.  There has been a lot of speculation about the former Focus store, which is an excellent site, and I’m pleased that we now have a firm announcement on this, which will provide a further jobs boost locally.”
