>> 15 November 2013

A pipe band has been awarded the Pride of Buchan award for outstanding achievement on the competition field at local and national levels in 2013.

The Buchan Peterson Pipe Band was crowned Grade 2 Champion of Champions at this year’s Cowal Highland Gathering held in Dunoon at the end of August. They also came top on the day in winning The Cowal Championship. The Champion of Champions award goes to the top pipe band in each grade and is decided over five major events over the season.

A total of 135 pipe bands competed in this year’s Highland Gathering where the award was made. The band was also crowned World Champions on Glasgow Green earlier in the month which is seen as a major accolade on the world stage.

At a meeting of the Buchan Area Committee in September, councillors agreed that the pipe band’s achievements should be recognised with the Pride of Buchan Award. The award was presented to members of the pipe band by Area Chairman, Councillor Stuart Pratt, last night.

Commenting, Councillor Pratt said:

“I am very pleased to be presenting this ward to the Buchan Peterson Pipe Band, on behalf of Buchan Area Committee and the area of Buchan.

“The pipe band’s achievements in earning their award at this year’s Cowal Highland Gathering is remarkable and a great example of the talent and enthusiasm to be found in Buchan’s communities.”

Band chairman Robert Skinner said:

“We are delighted to receive the Pride of Buchan award. This caps off what has been a fantastic season for the Buchan Peterson Pipe Band. We have already started the hard work for next season, as is evident in the band hall tonight. We look forward to carrying the name of Buchan forward in 2014.”
