Boost for NE Credit Unions to Support More People

>> 19 November 2016

Aberdeenshire Council’s Partnership Administration of SNP, Labour and Progressive Independent councillors have backed two local credit unions with financial support to allow them to expand their support to people in the North-east.

Earlier this year at the full council meeting in June a decision was taken to allocate an uncommitted balance of over £200,000 (known as year-end flexibility) to support the work of local credit unions.

Members of the Policy & Resources Committee, reviewed the next steps and agreed to split the funding equally between two local credit unions, NESCU and Grampian Credit Union.

Aberdeenshire Council Co-leader, Cllr Richard Thomson (SNP-Ellon & District) said:

“Members of the Policy and Resources Committee recognise the support that Credit Unions provide to communities the length and breadth of Aberdeenshire. This money will help to ensure that they are able to support even more people in the future”.

Co-leader of Aberdeenshire Council, Cllr Alison Evison (Lab-North Kincardine) said:

“This decision will substantially improve the position of the respective credit unions and allows them to build capacity, develop and grow. This is good news for credit unions serving Aberdeenshire”.
