A96 COUNCILLORS UNITE TO WELCOME ROAD IMPROVEMENTS
>> 11 December 2008
Local councillors serving Wards along the A96 corridor have united in welcoming the announcement by the Scottish Government Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson that the bottleneck Inveramsay Bridge is to be replaced.
SNP councillors Joanna Strathdee (Huntly, Strathbogie & Howe of Alford), Allison Grant (West Garioch), and Bryan Stuart (Inverurie & District), have backed the announcement which will see a major improvement to the A96 and to road safety.
"This is very good news indeed from the Scottish Government.
"Regular users of the A96 will know just how frustrating it is that the main road between Aberdeen and Inverness should be subject to this sort of obstacle in this day and age. I am absolutely delighted."
Councillor Joanna Strathdee added:
"After quarter of a century of Liberal representation in Gordon, including eight years in Government propping up the Labour Party, nothing at all was done towards improving or removing one of the North-east's most notorious bottlenecks.
"Now, after just 18 months of having quality representation for Gordon from an SNP MSP we see that lobbying has paid off with this announcement."
Inverurie's Councillor Bryan Stuart said:
"I have campaigned for this for some time, along with the recently completed improvements at Inverurie Railway Station, and am pleased at just how quickly the SNP Government have moved on these two issues.
"Inveramsay Bridge has been single lane with traffic lights for thirty years, and it really does beg the question as to why nothing was done earlier at either location when there was a Liberal Transport Minister nationally and a Liberal MSP locally."
