Councillor Comments on Stoneyhill Landfill Application

>> 29 May 2012

Commenting on the planning application before the Buchan Area Committee today seeking a 12 year extension to the end date for operations at Stoneyhill Landfill Site, Peterhead South & Cruden councillor Stephen Smith said:

“Unfortunately, the Buchan Area Committee has no powers over the monitoring or operation of the landfill site at Stoneyhill.

“As a local resident, I know only too well the problems with odours caused by the presence of excess amounts of leachate at the site, although I acknowledge the efforts of SITA to address these, with some success, since taking over the site.

“I am therefore pleased that the Buchan Area Committee backed my suggestion to the planning department that it be made a condition of the planning consent for Stoneyhill that the local watchdog body comprising local residents and public officials receive regular reports of any complaints or breaches of the pollution prevention regulations.  That way, a close eye can be kept on the situation locally and action taken if required.”
